National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole says the South African Police Service (SAPS) will make sure they implement the Constitutional Court ruling on firearms at all police stations across the country.

Sithole and police management have been in Parliament to brief the Police committee on the implications of a recent ruling that owners whose gun licenses have lapsed must hand their firearms in to the nearest police station.

Their guns will be stored at any police station for safe keeping until they have renewed their licenses.

Sithole says cooperation from firearm license owners is also necessary to implement the court ruling.

Concern has been raised in the committee about the police’s capacity to handle and store such firearm.

Some owners are also worried that their guns might reach the criminals via the police stations to commit crime.
