Siqalo settlement calm after a night of violent clashes

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The situation is calm at the Siqalo informal settlement just outside Mitchells Plain in Cape Town following violent clashes overnight.

Police fired rubber bullets to disperse a large crowd gathered at Highlands Drive.

Clashes broke out between the community of Siqalo and the residents of the Colorado surburb on Wednesday night after the community of Siqalo embarked on a violent protest, blocking roads and vandalising a nearby garage.

One person was killed and 39 arrested for public violence.

Late Thursday night, police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse a crowd of about 500 people whom had gathered at Highlands Drive.

Law Enforcement Inspector, Wayne Dyason, says in response, individuals in the group responded by firing live rounds at SAPS officers.

In 2012, the private land owner initiated an eviction order for community members at Siqalo, in a matter that is still ongoing.

Tensions had been brewing in the neighbouring suburb of Colorado over constant service delivery protests by Siqalo community members.

The Colorado community say they are fed up with the constant protest action which often prevents them from getting to work.

The City of Cape Town says it written to the land owner to request access to deliver services but it has not received a response.

The situation is calm and roads are open Friday morning.
