Sing for Madiba

Reading Time: < 1 minute

South Africans are being encouraged to break into song to wish former president Nelson Mandela a happy 93rd birthday on Monday, July 18. The Education Department and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have partnered to get at least 12.4 million school children across the country to sing at exactly 8am on the day.

They are encouraging the rest of the nation to join in to ensure that 20-million voices are heard. Organisers say the gesture is aimed at thanking Mandela for his contribution to the country.
Education Department’s Panyaza Lesufi says: “We would like to encourage all South Africans that lets make the 18th of July the most beautiful dayin our country whereever we are at. Our factory floors, in our offices – at five minutes past eight let’s stop and sing happy birthday to you Tata, not only for what he has done for us but for the entire world.”
