Silindini villagers at Emaxesibeni, formerly known as Mount Ayliff in the Eastern Cape, want answers from the Umzimvubu Local Municipality as to what happened to R8 million allocated for the construction of a bridge.

The bridge was meant to connect nearby villages. Locals say the construction company only put three culverts at the centre of Mzimvubu River and then disappeared. Community leader Mbulelo Siyomo says crossing the river is very dangerous for villagers.

“We are not happy because we asked for money for the bridge from government. What happened is the construction company came and left this incomplete bridge. He brought machines and tools with mechanical problems. This site turned into a mechanical site. We are now suffering we have to cross this river.”

Government says the first contractor that was awarded a tender experienced some difficulties, and his services were terminated.

Umzimvubu Local Municipality mayor Sobane Mnukwa says a new contractor has taken over.

“Due to the site being abandoned by the contractor, the municipality issued intent to terminate in which the contractor was terminated effectively on the 26 February 2020. It is however pleasing to note that a new contractor has been appointed for the completion of the bridge. It is expected to be completed by the end of this month.”
