Sibanye to say about opening

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Sibanye is expected to announce on Sunday whether its Beatrix gold mine in the northern Free State will re-open on Monday.

This follows an incident this the past week when almost 1 300 mine workers were trapped underground.

More than 950 of them were stuck for almost two days because of a lack of electricity.

Management had to borrow a generator from another mine to bring them all to the surface.

Sibanye said earlier that inspectors would do an audit at Beatrix and that if they deemed the mine to be safe, operations would resume on Monday.

Unions have been highly critical and have warned that their members will not resume work at Beatrix until their safety can be assured.
