In 2002, the Human Rights Media Centre produced a documentary called “We never Give up” which focused on the narratives of eleven struggle veterans. Some of these veterans were included, while others were excluded by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
That documentary looked at the impact human rights violations have had on their lives. It also put the spotlight on the ongoing struggles for reparations from the South African government and multinational companies for knowingly aiding and abetting apartheid. Ten years later, a sequel to this documentary was made to assess their progress in the new South Africa. Some of the veterans have since died before winning their battle and of those who are left having to make other means to eke out a living. This week’s Special Assignment brings you the follow up.
