Shoprite workers still on strike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Workers at the retail chain store Shoprite say they have not reached an agreement with management regarding some working conditions. The workers’ strike has entered its second day.

Their demands include transport for those who knock-off at night and for casual workers who have been with the retail chain store for more than five years to be employed permanently.

It’s not business as usual at the Matlapeng shopping centre in Freedom Park. This is a centre that services residents of Eldorado Park and Freedom Park.

Shoprite workers came in as early as 6am on Thursday morning, blocking the gates, barring staff and management of the store  from entering the premises.

Security personnel are placed at the main entrance advising shoppers that the store is not operating.

Meanwhile, a stone’s throw away from Matlapeng, the Shoprite in Eldorado Park is open to business with outsourced personnel.

However, the workers have vowed to mobilize support from other shops to ensure that the shop is closed also.
