Members of the Tornado Football Club are in shock after the club chairperson, Siphiwo “Mawawa” Nyobo, was shot dead outside the North End stadium in East London Saturday night. The club’s coach, Tshepo Motseneng says he had a meeting and dinner with Nyobo just before the shooting happened.

Motseneng says shortly after they parted, he heard sounds from the gate of the stadium. He was then informed that Nyobo was shot.

“I went to the car and still found him there, still moving, but not that he could do anything. It was visible what happened to him, I could see. Then it was, what is it that these people are looking for, money? He had a float on him, I think it was around R50 000, R60 000 in his pockets, but that was not taken. What do you call this, is it football related, I don’t know, is it other business avenues, I cannot put my finger on it.”

Messages of condolences continue to pour in for Nyobo. Eastern Cape Sport MEC, Bulelwa Tunyiswa, has visited Nyobo’s home in Mdantsane. She described him as a person who had a heart for community development.

“I think people like these ones, like Mawawa, need to be appreciated. We are really grateful, but what we would love to see as from now is to ensure that we prepare a very decent funeral or send off because he has done his part in the contribution of ensuring that this youth is taken away from the social ills.”
