Shilowa to assist UDM with campaigning and fundraising

Former Congress of the People (Cope) leader Mbazima Shilowa says he will not be part of the integration of his supporters into the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

Shilowa and UDM leader Bantu Holomisa earlier announced they would campaign jointly in the build-up to the May 7 general election. Shilowa says he first wants to sort out issues related to Cope’s leadership. Last month Shilowa lost a court battle to nullify a Cope national conference.

“The personal reasons are simply that because there is an interim interdict which I would need to attend to, I would not want that to impact on this process. However my presence here says two things, first that I’m fully behind that process, but secondly that I will be available to assist in this process, be it campaigning, be it fundraising, be it thinking and all of that,” says Shilowa.

Holomisa says Shilowa’s experience in labour and politics will be an asset to the UDM. Meanwhile, Cope has dismissed the union as nothing but a political gimmick.
