Shia Muslims concerned about their safety

Shia Muslims in Cape Town are concerned about their safety, following a deadly attack on a mosque in Verulam,  north of Durban, earlier this month.

One person was killed and two wounded in an attack by knife-wielding men who also set the mosque alight.

Days later, a device which the Hawks confirmed to be a bomb, was found in the mosque.

The Shia community is a minority group among Muslims in South Africa.

“We are trying to be as cautious as possible. We are trying our best to avoid any possible incident or unfortunate incident – and yes – we have tightened our security. We have alerted law enforcement agencies around here also to keep an eye on any activity or anything which can be suspected of any problem,” says Head of Cape Town’s Shia Mosque in Ottery, Moulana Sayed Aftab Haider.
