Reading Time: < 1 minute

Thousands of Nazareth Baptist Church members also known as Shembe Church have started their annual pilgrimage to Mount Nhlangakazi in Inanda, north of Durban.

Worshippers believe that it was at the top of Nhlangakazi mountain where God instructed Isaiah Shembe to establish the church.

The 72-kilometre journey is expected to end by the end of the week. They will then stay on top of the mountain for two weeks before descending.

It’s believed that Isaiah Shembe climbed to the top of the mountain, while there he got an instruction from God to establish a church.

Shembe Church is one of the biggest indigenous churches in Africa with over 5 million followers.

But over the years, it’s been plagued by leadership battles, dividing the church right in the middle.

But one thing all factions agree on, the spiritual journey to the top of the mountain is a must.
