Shell SA is disappointed with the High Court ruling in Makhanda bringing a halt to its seismic survey along the wild coast of the Eastern Cape.

The applicants argued that numerous leading experts confirm that the survey which uses compressed air fired at the seabed, would cause significant and irreparable harm to marine life in the affected area and will impact the livelihoods, constitutional rights, and customary rights of coastal communities.

Shell SA Chairperson, Hloniphizwe Mtolo says the company will take stock of the ruling before making a decision.

“We suspended the survey as of 11h00 this morning (Tuesday) immediately when we were notified of the ruling. At this stage, we are engaging with all our internal stakeholders in terms of mapping up our way forward. It is a real disappointment for us, but we will then make a review and them make a decision thereafter.”
