Shark nets removed from Durban beachfront

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Shark nets have been removed from all protected beaches along the Durban beachfront. Sardine netting is taking place at Pumula on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. Small pockets of the little, silver fish were spotted early on Saturday morning.

Yesterday the main concentration of sardine activity was on the South Coast between Sezela and Mdesinga Bay. Operations Manager at the KZN Sharks Board, Greg Thompson says:

“So far this morning, the only netting on the KZN coast has been at the Pumula beach. I only know of one net that’s been taken but there’s still quite a lot of sardine moving north just behind the back line. Hopefully when the tide comes in a bit later they’ll continue netting at Pumula and in this general area.”

In the last week, sardine activity has been seen mainly on the province’s south coast where many pockets of the fish have been netted.

Thompson says members of the public must exercise caution should they enter the water during this time. Thompson says it remains unclear however, if the sardines will arrive in Durban.

“You know at the moment it’s just so difficult to make a prediction. We try and anticipate to stay ahead of the shoals. Today it seems like the fish that were in that area has actually moved south so at the moment they are driving us fairly scatty and they just seem to be doing their own thing.”
