Social Development Minister Susan Shabangu says police need to step up and help in the fight against substance abuse.

Speaking during the official launch of the Northern Cape Substance Abuse Treatment Centre in Kimberley, Shabangu has told police to deal with suppliers and drug peddlers.

The minister says drugs have destroyed communities and households, acknowledging a need for more state-owned rehabilitation centres.

“Let’s make sure, when they come out from here, we can embrace them as society. Because sometimes it is us as community, who push them back to such centers. The police are here. They must also help us to deal with the drug lords and syndicates, because they are the ones who are destroying our young people.”
