People living in low lying areas - especially in informal settlements - were urged to take extra precautions.

The South African Weather Service has issued an alert for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng over the weekend starting from Friday afternoon.

On Thursday night the eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal issued a statement of warning of a severe storm with the possibility of localised flooding.

The city’s Disaster Management team was placed on high alert as the heavy rains were expected from Thursday until the early hours of Friday morning.

People living in low lying areas – especially in informal settlements – were urged to take extra precautions.
