Several parties might fall off in Parliament: Analyst

The Director of Research at the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection, Prof Susan Booysen, says several parties might fall off the representation radar in Parliament.

Prof Booysen says the hierarchy that is emerging between the smaller parties is interesting, where several of them may fall off.

“COPE from a decade ago when they just launched, they had eight percent of the national vote and they’re continuously going down. Subsequently, very likely to fall off the representation radar in Parliament,” says Prof Booysen.

The counting of votes is still underway with the African National Congress (ANC) leading with approximately 55% of the national vote. The Democratic Alliance (DA) is on 26.0%, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is on 8% of the national ballot.

Booysen says new parties such as the African Transformation Movement (ATM) and Good might gain entry into Parliament.

“It seems like Good may be breaking through in Parliament representation and the ATM it seems could be there in Parliament,” says Prof Booysen.
