Marikana protest turns violent

Several people in Marikana West, near Rustenburg in North West, have allegedly been shot at by security personnel using rubber bullets and stun grenades from the GlenCore mine.

This after locals marched to the mine to hand over a memorandum of demands, regarding the high rate of unemployment especially amongst the youth.

Residents spokesperson Vido Nqonga says: “Today when they went to submit the memorandum security official shot at them. I am sure I got 10 or 11 injured they are also bleeding and they are lying down. We don’t know who is going to die. So far they shot 11 people they are already down. There is no ambulance. Police are here but they are doing nothing. People are lying down and bleeding.”
