Sense of loss felt at Chabane’s funeral

There’s a strong sense of loss in the village of Xikundu in Malamulele, Limpopo, where Public Administration minister Collins Chabane’s funeral is underway.

The funeral procession arrived at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, led by church elders, while Umkhonto we Sizwe veterans held a guard of honour.

President Jacob Zuma, among hundreds of mourners who are attending the funeral service will also deliver a eulogy in Chabane’s honour.

Long lines have formed out of the sports ground in Xikundu, people are streaming in in large numbers

Chabane died in a car crash on the N1 in Limpopo on Sunday. His two bodyguards Sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane also perished in the crash.

Meanwhile, the funeral service of Lentsoane is underway in Vlakfontein village in Ga-Marishane in Limpopo. Police Minister Nathi Nhleko, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and some deputy ministers are among those who will speak during the funeral service. Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe is expected to deliver the eulogy at the official funeral of Lentsoane.

Members of the ANC, Cosatu and the SACP are singing liberations songs in honour of Chabane. Long lines are forming out of the sports ground in Xikundu, a village where people are streaming in in large numbers and dignitaries are expected to start coming in.

Today is a sad day for those who have lived and worked with minister Chabane.
