Caster Semenya was the big winner at the South African Sports Awards on Sunday night.

Olympic gold medalist and athlete Caster Semenya was the big winner at the South African Sports Awards (SASA), which were held at the Sand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein on Sunday night.

The 2017 World Championships’ 800m champion won awards for Sports Star of the Year, People’s Choice Sports Star of the Year and the Sportswoman of the Year.

Semenya was not present at the ceremony and her trainer, Samuel Sepeng, received them on her behalf.

“I believe as a coach, come 2019 obviously there’s a bigger picture, but to start where we end up. Running 1:54.2 and taking the world record. The bigger goal for us is to get to that world record but obviously we need time. We need to sit down and do all the planning but I believe she can do it,” says Sepeng.

Amongst the winners was Chad le Clos for Sportsman of the Year, Banyana Banyana for Team of the Year and Tatjan Schoenmaker for Newcomer of the Year.
