Service delivery, corruption, sewage leakages and a host of other challenges have been highlighted in a townhall meeting hosted by the SABC’s Morning Live programme at Sedibeng in Gauteng. Participants included Sedibeng mayors, political party representatives and community members.
Sedibeng is one of the districts that consists of Emfuleni, Lesedi and the Midvaal local municipalities.
Emfuleni local municipality is the biggest municipality in the country. It is obligated to provide services to over a million people.
Mayor Jacob Kawe says the municipality is heavily populated as it is the first stop for most people when they cross the Vaal river.
He says the municipality is facing budget challenges because of this population explosion.
Mayor of Lesedi Local Municipality, Lerato Maloka, says her municipality has been successful in providing basic services to its people.
She says over 95% of the people have been able to access the services.
Mayor of the Midvaal Local Municipality Bongani Baloyi says they have been consistent in good governance and providing services to people.
He says they are committed to providing for the people and also making sure that discipline comes first in handling the finances of the municipality.

Emfuleni DA leader says the municipality has many challenges including service delivery, corruption, potholes, sewage leakages and incompetent appointments.
He says the ANC leadership is not serious about changing the lives of the people of Emfuleni.
Representing the UDM, a member says there is a lot of arrogance from municipalities led by the ANC.
She says as opposition parties it is difficult to raise issues as they are not taken seriously.
A COPE member says most problems stem from cadre deployments.
He says the mismanagement of funds is a major concern.
