Tensions are high in some parts of Kenya as the nation heads to the polls on Thursday.

On Wednesday night there were clashes between police and supporters of the opposition leader Raila Odinga in Mombasa and Homa Bay counties, southern Kenya.

Security forces are on high alert.

The country is holding a re-election after the August results were annulled due to irregularities with results.

Roads leading to polling stations have been barricaded to prevent the voting process from happening.

Polls opened at 5am (SA time) but stations are yet to be opened. There are no voters at the gates.

On Wednesday Odinga called for the boycott of the elections saying they won’t be free, fair or credible.

AU Observer Mission Head: former President Thabo Mbeki appealed to Kenyans to respect the voting process by letting those who want to exercise their right to cast their ballot to do so peacefully.

He also called on police to ensure calm is maintained throughout the country.
