Security and security violence prompts to VUT shutdown

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has been shut down following violent clashes between security guards, students and riot police deployed to the institution.

Security guards employed by an external company are protesting over payment issues.

VUT’s Executive Director for Corporate Affairs Mike Khubone says management is meeting the security company to try resolve the matter.

“There were students in front of the gate together with the security staff. They were supporting the security staff which have not been paid by the service provider. We suspended the operations temporarily so that we can actually solve this problem.”

“There were stone-throwing this morning between the riot security that the university has employed to protect the property, between them and the students. But right now everything has calmed down,” says Khubone.
