Public hearings across the country are being held for people to make submissions on the possible amendment of the Constitution for land to be expropriated without compensation.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the plan by government to attempt to amend Section 25 of the Constitution clause will chase away investors.

Parliament’s Constitutional review committee is holding public hearings across the country for South Africans to make submissions on the possible amendment of the Constitution for land to be expropriated without compensation.

The Committee will wrap up the current leg of its public hearings at Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State and in Middelburg, Mpumalanga on Wednesday.

DA leader in the Free State, Patricia Kopane, says only the government will benefit if the clause is amended.

“If the government is going to pass this piece of legislation to be an act, the government is the one to own the land, not the people of South Africa. European partners are worried about the uncertainty of piece of this legislation. Investors want to pull out. People are going to be losing their jobs.”
