Second day of special votes on Tuesday

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A second day of special voting in the general elections takes place on Tuesday. Polling stations open at 9am for special votes and will close at 5pm.

The general elections get underway in earnest on Wednesday when millions of South Africans will make their mark.

While special voting across many stations in the eThekwini Municipality got underway on Monday without any glitches, some voters were frustrated by delays due to the late arrival of ballot boxes.

This is what one of residents from Westville in Durban had to say: “I cast my vote early, it took a very long time. We went to Avon Junior Primary at 9:30, there was no sign of anything around. We then went to Westville Civic Centre, they were set up and had no idea what we could do. At 11, IEC posters went up, they said they just received ballot boxes. The special votes at Westville Civic Centre went out without a glitch.”

Meanwhile, two voting stations in Zoeknog in Arcornhoek, Mpumalanga did not open for the special votes on Monday.

Residents dug trenches on the road preventing Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officials access route to open the stations. The residents were demanding service delivery.
