A search is under way for an unconfirmed number of people who are believed to have been swept away by raging waters in the Weenen area in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged that a taxi lost control while crossing a bridge and was swept away by rapid waters.

A spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Senzelwe Mzila says search and rescue teams are at the scene.

“We’ve received reports from our teams in the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, who have confirmed that they are continuing to work on the scene where a tragic incident happened, where a taxi was swept away by raging waters. We believe that it was crossing a bridge. The scene is still active now and the teams have been deployed to the area and they are working with the various search and rescue teams.”
