An Irish based organ donor foundation has donated a sculpture to Grootte Schuur Hospital in Cape Town as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the first heart transplant performed by Dr Chris Barnard.

The Strangeboat Donor Foundation was unveiled the rock-like piece at the hospital on Thursday.

Spokesperson Paeder ‘O Hici says they hope the sculpture will act as a beacon of hope to others.

“Well, it’s a symbol, really, of the whole sense of hope of things rising up from the flame on the top and the scribe on the front … then is the symbol of the medical world. It’s a combination of the work that the medical professions can do and the hope that it brings to new bodies and new people.”
