Scores arrested after violent protests in Free State

Over 75 people have been arrested in different areas in Free State due to service delivery protests.

Fifty-one people have been arrested in Malebogo township in Hertzogville Free State. Protests turned violent during service delivery riots on Tuesday morning.

Angry protesters moved from Malebogo township to the town, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Eleven shops belonging to foreign nationals have been looted. Residents are demanding an end to bucket toilets, the completion of a school and a local stadium.

Schooling has been disrupted and the local clinic has also been closed. Roads have been barricaded with rocks, trees and tyres.  Police have been deployed to the area.

In Kgotsong, Bothaville over 20 people have been arrested for public violence. This after angry residents also went on the rampage demanding jobs and improved services.

Residents have accused the Nala Municipality for failing to meet their demands.

Tuesday marks the second day of no schooling in Kgotsong. While calm has been restored, traces of what happened remain.

Fourteen foreign national shops have been looted. Some of them have been burnt down.

Left overs of burnt tyres are visible on the roads.

Police remain on high alert in the area.
