SANBS urges people to donate blood

The South African National Blood Service is urging people to continue donating blood, especially as we are approaching long Easter weekend.

The organisation says it is in need of more blood donations ahead of the long weekends.

It needs to collect at least 3000 units of blood a day to meet the high demand for blood in the country, but unfortunately they are far from that target.

Prisoners are tested for TB

Testing prisoners for Tuberculosis (TB) in the country has now been made a whole lot easier.

The first on-site digital x-ray machine has been launched at the Pollsmoor Correctional Facility in Cape Town.

A scan takes minutes, and if needs be, further testing is done on site.

But until now, authorities relied on the GeneXpert machine which was launched in 2013.

The machine only takes two hours to test for the disease.

Nearly 10 000 prisoners have been tested for TB since 2013 and just over 700 patients have started their treatment.

And finally…

E-cigarettes users on the increase

A large study of British school students has revealed that one in five teenagers have experimented with e-cigarettes.

The study has fuelled debates about the widespread availability of the electronic devices.

According to the charity Action on Smoking and Health – more than 2 million adults use e-cigarettes in Britain, and about one third of whom are ex-smokers and two-thirds are current smokers.
