The South African team in the Commonwealth Games has won their first gold medal. This after Henri Schoeman won the triathlon title in Gold Coast Australia on Thursday morning, on the first day of the tournament.

Schoeman adds that title to the bronze medal that he won at the Olympic Games in 2016. South Africa’s swimmers had mixed results in the pool.

Chad le Clos, Ryan Coetzee and Bradley Tandy will all swim in the semi-finals of the 50 metre butterfly, just before 1 o’clock on Thursday.

Le Clos is the fastest qualifier, following the disqualification of favourite Ben Proud of England.

Also through to the semi-finals are Tatjana Schoenmaker in the 50m breaststroke, Martin Binedell and Calvyn Justus in the 100m backstroke, and Erin Gallagher in the 100m butterfly.

The women’s hockey team lost 2-0 to England, neither of the track cycling teams made it through to the medal round in the 4000 metre team pursuit, and the badminton squad lost to Australia.

Colleen Piketh won her opening match in the lawn bowls singles, but the men lost to Wales.
