SA’s recovery rate remains below 50% as 13 497 new infections are confirmed

South Africa’s coronavirus (COVID-19) recovery rate remains below 50% at 48.4% with 127 715 recoveries recorded. There’s only been a 1.2 percentage point improvement from Friday. The country has on Saturday also recorded 13 497 new infections, bringing the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases to 264 184.

Gauteng has continued to see a steep rise in new infections recording 6 011 new cases, steadily headed to bridge the 100 000 mark in the next few days.

A total of 111 new deaths were also recorded bringing the death toll to 3 971, only 29 shy of 4 000.

Police Spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo says the Letsitele Police Station outside Tzaneen has been closed for decontamination after a police officer tested positive. The other affected police stations are Cumberland in the Waterberg District, Dennilton and Nebo in Sekhukhune, Musina and Tshilwavhusiku in the Vhembe District.

More than 12.59 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 560,026​ have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
