SA’s national COVID-19 death toll rises to 55 260

South Africa has recorded 1 757 new coronavirus infections in the last 24-hour cycle, taking the total number to 1 615 485.
The country has also recorded 50 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Monday. This brings the total number of deaths to 55 260.
In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Free State.
“Regrettably, we report 50 more COVID-19 related deaths: Eastern Cape 4, Free State 30, Gauteng 6, Kwa-Zulu Natal 0, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 0, North West 0, Northern Cape 8 and Western Cape 2,” says Dr Mkhize.

Recoveries stand at 1 526 638.

The number of tests conducted to date is 11 134 553.

On Monday, South Africa started with the second phase of the vaccination programme, people 60 years and older received their first jab.

Dr Mkhize will be launching Phase 2 of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout campaign in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.

Nearly 150 000 people older than 60 have registered to be vaccinated in the province so far.
The provincial health department is urging those who are eligible, to register on the Electronic Vaccination Data System.
