SA’s Freedom Day celebrated in Kenya

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Ambassadors and High Commissioners representing various governments as well as Kenyan government officials and businessmen gathered in Nairobi to mark South Africa’s Freedom Day.

South African High Commissioner to Kenya Anita Koleka Mqulwana hailed African governments for standing by South Africa during the struggle years.

She called on leaders on the continent to dedicate their lives to service as South African struggle icons Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu did.

At the South African High Commissioner’s residence in Nairobi, high profile guests and friends of South Africa gathered to mark the nation’s 24th Freedom Day anniversary.

A day dedicated to the remembrance of the republic’s struggle icons and the role Africa’s founding father played in liberating South Africa.

“We had anti-apartheid movements all over the world and as South Africa we remain thankful in the role that you have played in ensuring that SA today is democratic, non-racial and non-sexist country,” says Mqulwana.

For Kenya and South Africa, this was a day to take stock of the gains made in realising the two nations’ bilateral relations.

“Both SA and Kenya continue to work together in enhancing peace and security, in the fight against terrorism,” says Chief Administrative Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Kenya Ababu Namwamba.

To mark the late President Nelson Mandela’s centenary, the high commission says it will have yearlong charity events across Kenya.
