Tshebeletso Seremane says SARS staff members have been subjected to abuse and humiliation, which led to a number of resignations and dismissals at the organisation

A senior executive at SARS has testified that a sense of fear prevailed during Tom Moyane’s tenure as SARS Commissioner between March 2014 and March 2018.

The executive for Tax Payer Engagement, Sobantu Ndlangalavu, was testifying at the SARS Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.

The Inquiry is investigating factors which contributed to instability at the institution, including the earlier purging of staff members at the organisation.

“An atmosphere of fear prevailed. We felt an unease of not being trusted,” says Ndlangalavu.

Another former SARS executive Tshebeletso Seremane says productivity and morale among SARS employees are low.  She says staff members have been subjected to abuse and humiliation, which led to a number of resignations and dismissals at the organisation.

“The morale is low. We had a meeting with commissioner Moyane with employees in the high risk unit or the so called rouge unit. The work that they were doing is actually risky, they risked their lives, only to be told that the work that they actually did, looks like vomit,” says Seremane.
