SANEF seeks fair compensation for local media on digital platforms

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has made an appeal to the country’s competition authorities to ensure fair compensation and sharing of data between local media houses and global digital platforms.

SANEF took part in the Competition Commission’s Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry (MDPMI) currently under way in Pretoria.

SANEF, alongside the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisations (UNESCO) and others, made oral presentations to the inquiry today.

SANEF’s Forum Chairperson Sbu Ngalwa explains, “Fair compensation to us should be based on the value that the platforms derive from the content and also we believe that small and local community media organisations should be enabled to participate and benefit from these systems. But the reality is that we don’t know what that value is.”
