The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has called on people to come and donate blood as stockpiles run low in some areas during the festive season.  Provinces such as Mpumalanga are currently running low.

The SANBS says the COVID-19 pandemic has also impacted blood donations.

SANBS Spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Khensani Mahlangu says they are available in malls and other public areas for blood donors to assist.

“Today, we are sitting at 2.9 days blood stock and demand for blood at hospitals is very unpredictable and considering that we are still in the festive break, we do not expect this to slow down. So our plea is that all our donors, especially those with group O blood visit the donors centre or a mobile blood drive to give a unit of blood. We run an awareness campaigns throughout the year to educate donors on the need for blood, and at the moment we have virtual campaign running on our social media platforms,” says Khensani Mahlangu.
