The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) is appealing for people to donate blood due to the increasing number of road casualties during the festive season.

The organisation says there is a severe shortage of blood in KwaZulu-Natal.

SANBS’ Solomuzi Ngcobo they are hoping to obtain a sufficient supply of blood during this season.

“In KZN, we are in a serious crisis of blood shortage. Currently we have stock levels of 1-3. In simple terms, that means if all things remain equal and all donors do not come to donate blood we will run out of blood in about 1.3 days. The festive season, even though it’s a nice season, it tends to present us with some challenges. The problem we are particularly face during the festive season is the increase in the incidents of motor vehicle – and hence increased causalities,” says  Ngcobo.
