The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA ) has revoked former South African Airways (SAA) director Yakhe Kwinana’s membership following the outcome of her disciplinary hearing.

Kwinana is a former SAA board member who came into the spotlight when she used a “fat cake” analogy at the commission into State Capture to justify cancelling an R85 million contract and handing it to subsidiary Air Chefs without a tender.

The SAICA Disciplinary Committee found Kwinana guilty of 13 of the 14 charges against her.

According to the committee, Kwinana is not a fit and proper individual to be a member of the profession and has been fined R6.1 million  for all 13 of her charges.

SAICA’s CEO, Freeman Nomvalo, says they take all instances of alleged contravention of the SAICA Code of Professional Conduct seriously and all matters are investigated, irrespective of the nature of the assignment or the individual member concerned.
