The South African Human Rights Commission has recommended that disciplinary action be taken against education officials who failed to ensure the safety of learners at the school for the deaf in Leeudoringstad in the North West.

In 2015 three learners died in a fire which broke out at the girls’ hostel while scores were injured.

The commission has made damning findings against the school, the provincial Education Department and the Basic Education Minister.

“From our findings they were negligent or they failed to ensure that safety measures were in place.  We are saying disciplinary measures have to be taken against them.  In the instance that such measures, such proceedings have already been instituted we are directing that SACE or Department of Education North West must deliver a detailed report of the disciplinary steps that they took,” says provincial head of the commission Mpho Boikanyo.
