SAHRC confirms sexual misconduct at Don Mattera Centre

An investigation report by the South African Human Rights Commission, states that there has been sexual misconduct by children at the Don Mattera Child and Youth Centre in Edenvale, east of Johannesburg.

The probe was requested by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in August last year following allegations of rape and underage sex.

DA MP Mike Waters and DA Councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni, Bill Rundle, attempted to lay criminal charges against the Department of Social Development and the Manager of the Don Mattera Centre at the Edenvale Police Station in March this year.

The SAHRC report confirms there was sexual misconduct by the children. However, the DA says the Human Rights Commission has not dealt with allegations of rape, as they can only act on evidence being produced.

Another finding is that children did abscond from the home, but there was no register kept for these abscondments at the child centre.

The DA says they are deeply concerned about the children’s safety as these children are vulnerable ones.
