Saftu ready for war on minimum wage

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The South Africa Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) says it’s prepared to go to war to oppose the proposed minimum wage.

Saftu General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi led over a thousand people to Parliament to demand the scrapping of the proposed minimum wage as well as proposed strike balloting laws.

Firstly, the federation wants the proposed minimum wage of R20 rand per hour scrapped. This translates to a monthly income of R3 500 for a 40 hour week.

Saftu wants R12 500. The federation also wants the proposal to ballot workers before they can go on strike to be taken off the table.

The union is opposed to an arbitrator mediating when an employer complains that a prolonged strike is affecting business.

Saftu says if Parliament does not heed to their demands within two weeks, the federation will embark on a nationwide shutdown.
