The South African Football Coaches Association (SAFCA) has congratulated South African businessman, philanthropist and club owner, Dr Patrice Motsepe who was on Friday elected president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) unopposed.

In a statement, SAFCA says it hopes and believes that the election of Motsepe will go a long way in addressing the interests of the COSAFA region in Africa.

“We note, however, the absence of a technical vision in Motsepe’s much-celebrated 10-point Action Plan aimed at improving the standard of the game in Africa. While there are many off-the-field issues that have been a hindrance to the development of the game in the continent, the need for the absence of technical vision is of key importance,” says SAFCA.

SAFCA says Motsepe’s election comes at a time when African football is in dire straits and needs a new vision to guide the continent to claim its rightful place in world football.

“Without the technical development and technical vision, there is no game. If Dr. Motsepe’s election is going to be the game-changer for African football, this should be the tactic. We hope to have these discussions with the newly-elected African football leadership soon,” says Greg Mashilo, President of SAFCA.

SAFCA has also wished Motsepe and CAF the best in putting African football on a new growth path.

Minister Nathi Mthethwa has also joined all football followers in South Africa as well as the continent, in congratulating Motsepe on his appointment to the high office of CAF.

“Today’s news out of the Moroccan Capital of Rabat, whilst expected, is further confirmation of the high esteem enjoyed by South African Football in the community of Football nations. Following so closely after the successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup by South Africa, Mr Motsepe’s election as the 8th CAF President constitutes a welcome vote of confidence in our country by the 54-nation strong General Assembly,” said Minister Mthethwa.

Mthethwa says, judging by the 10-point plan that underpins Mr Motsepe’s Election Manifesto, it is clear that he not only intends to hit the ground running “but also constitutes a commitment to continental football in general and women’s football in particular, to be the centerpiece of his term as President.”
