Ramaphosa took over as chair of the regional body when he succeeded Jacob Zuma as South African president last month.

South African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary, Doctor Stergomena Lawrence Tax, says the 16-country body is more than delighted to have President Cyril Ramaphosa as its chairperson.

She welcomed Ramaphosa at SADC headquarters during his visit to Botswana’s capital, Gaberone, on Saturday.

She says there is a renewed sense of hope, that radical changes will take place within the SADC region both socially and economically.

President Ramaphosa received a warm welcome by the Botswana President Ian Khama and SADC Executive Secretary, Lawrence Tax.

He says he understands the task ahead of him as the new chair.

Tax says this is time for prosperity in the region.

“We are happy to welcome you here Mr President, we looking forward to an effective SADC.”

Ramaphosa’s visit formed part of his three state visits, which included Angola and Namibia.
