With exactly a month before the May general elections, the South African Communist Party (SACP) has welcomed the African National Congress’ (ANC) decision to provide a list of names to its Integrity Commission.

Last week, the ANC announced that some of its members appearing on its list for Parliament and provincial legislatures could be removed if they don’t pass the scrutiny of its Integrity Commission.

The SACP’s general-secretary, Blade Nzimande, says people should recognise the efforts by the ANC to ensure South Africans are confident in the governing party’s list.

“We do welcome the decision taken. People do not realise how important this decision is for the NEC to say their whole list must be taken to the Integrity Commission. We are aware there were people who did not want that to happen and we hope that it will really scrutinise and be able to advise and recommend. As the SACP, we have an interest in those on the list because the ANC is not just doing this for itself, it is doing this for the alliance and the people of SA. So we have a list that gives confidence to the people,” says Nzimande.
