The leadership of the South African Communist Party (SACP) will meet on Monday to discuss a newspaper report which implicates the party in essentially taking a bribe from VBS Mutual bank.

The report alleges that a former senior executive of VBS Mutual Bank revealed that a branch manager was ordered to make a three-million rand payment to fund the SACP’s national congress last year.

The report alleges that this was in exchange for the party’s silence on the bank’s relationship with the controversial Gupta family.

SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo says the leadership will consider the way forward in handling the matter.

“I can confirm to you that the leadership of the Communist party is meeting tomorrow morning and we are considering taking legal action. Our officials will be meeting; they will be briefed about the outcome of legal consultation and then they will look at that, consider taking legal action on behalf of the party and as we proceed we will make announcements at an appropriate time.”
