SACP not ruling out possibility of contesting 2024 national elections: Mapaila

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has not ruled out the possibility of contesting the 2024 elections. General Secretary of the SACP, Solly Mapaila, told SABC News that the process of exploring electoral options required consultation with alliance partners.

Such consultation would deliberate comprehensively on the concept of the state and state power, the relationship between the party and the state as well as considering the electoral options which are available to them.

“We must engage our allies so that such a process will be kicked off. To engage with the ANC and Cosatu, we have not started that,” says Mapaila.

The Communist Party’s National Congress Central Committee is currently holding its first plenary at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, during which a political report will be delivered and discussed, and a Central Ethics Commission and Discipline Inspectorate comprising of SACP stalwarts will be constituted.

Key outcomes from the meeting will be communicated on Sunday at a press briefing.
