Some listeners of Ligwalagwala FM, a SABC radio station based in Mbombela Mpumalanga, have commended the station for the role it has played in improving their lives.
Taxi operators, motorists and the station’s branded vehicles brought the city to a standstill as they embarked on a convoy around the streets of Mbombela.
The convoy which started at the Nelspruit Taxi Rank, proceeded to the R40 road, and made a turn at Riverside Mall in celebration of the four decades since the station was established. The station, with over 1.3 million listeners, covers the whole of Mpumalanga and also has footprints in other provinces and also neighbouring countries like Mozambique and Eswatini.
Listeners were happy to be part of the celebration. They say through the station’s programmes they have been able to take informed decisions about their lives and future.
Some of the listeners say despite the entertainment, information and education, the station also brings hope where there is none.
“We wish that Ligwalagwala can grow beyond the 40 years and reach 100 because it helps us a lot as listeners. We get information about everything, things that we don’t know about, including the weather, news, we wish Ligwalagwala to grow from strength to strength,” says a listener.
Taxi operators have also lauded the role of the radio station.
A taxi operator from Matsulu, Themba Msimango says his taxi is always tuned into Ligwalagwala FM.
“When you are tuned on Ligwalagwala FM in the taxi, you are getting information about any destruction on the road and accidents, again, if motorists sees something wrong on the road they alert the station which makes an announcement.”
Acting Business Manager Mpumalanga Combo, Ntfonjana Dlamini says listeners of the station must brace themselves for new content for both young and old. She added beside its mandate of entertaining, informing and educating, the station will continue to make a positive change in people’s lives, in particular the less privileged.
“There is a lot to expect with technology changes, and also our programming should also talk to that. It should not be a case of one hearing a programme and not getting it on social media or podcast, its about bettering ourselves”
Listeners of the station are urged to stay tuned, as one lucky listener will walk away with R40 000 prize money, as part of the 40th celebration.
