SABC workers urged to join lunch time picket on Friday

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Communication Workers Union(CWU) is calling on all SABC staff to take part in a lunch time picket at midday this Friday in protest against the impending staff retrenchments.

The SABC intends laying off 981 permanent staff and not to renew contracts of 1 200 freelancers.

This is part of cost saving measures which the new SABC executive says will save the corporation about R440 million per year.

The union’s General Secretary Aubrey Tshabalala says the plan is not to shutdown the SABC the entire day.

He says: ” We expect all SABC workers, union members and non union members to join this action. The message is very clear, it’s called lunch hour picket from 12:00 to 13:00. We will be outside as workers of SABC to join this massive action. Those who are working at that particular time have the right to join us in the the picketing.”
