SABC, unions urged to engage in peaceful wage talks

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Communications Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has asked SABC staff and their unions to allow an amicable solution to be reached through negotiations.

She says they should try by all means to avoid any disruptions to the public braadcaster’s day to day operations.

This as workers affiliated to trade unions CWU and Bemawu are expected to down tools on Thursday demanding a 10% salary increase. They’re rejecting the 4.5% tabled by the public broadcaster.

Minister Kubayi-Ngubane says while she respects workers’ constitutional right to strike, she believes peaceful wage negotiations should not be subordinated to a strike action.

She’s called on all stakeholders to engage in peaceful and constructive wage negotiations.

Kubayi-Ngubane says the SABC has experienced revenue loss in the past and as a result the current financial situation at the public broadcaster is untenable.

She’s pleaded with all parties involved in negotiations to avoid engaging in activities that could lead to further revenue loss.
