SABC striking employees affiliated to BEMAWU continue with strike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Workers union BEMAWU says the fact that the SABC can offer an inflation-based salary increase for employees for next year shows that the public broadcaster has money and wants to push the adjustments to 2018.

Staff-affiliated to BEMAWU are on strike but trade union CWU has withdrawn its notice to strike over a wage dispute.

This is despite an ultimatum that SABC management has issued for striking staff to return to work or face disciplinary action.

BEMAWU president Hannes du Buisson says, “We are meeting with the board on Friday. We did speak to employees and the indications from them are that they not going to go without a reasonable salary increase for this year. By offering that CTI increase to us on Thursday is a clear indication that there is money for employees and they just wanted to offer it next year and not this year. So we are waiting for the SABC to contact us. They are going to seek a mandate from the board today. We will continue until we hear from them.”
