Three SABC staff members who were allegedly detained by members of the cast and crew of a production company on the set of a new Zulu historical drama Uselwa in KwaZulu-Natal, have been freed and are on their way back home.

The broadcaster’s Kaizer Kganyago, has confirmed that tensions escalated on set when the production company in charge of the drama series was unable to pay the cast and crew.

“We sent three of our top officials in the content division to go and check what is going on and ultimately today we were told that the cast of that production were saying to them that until they are paid those three people shouldn’t go. The cast members are not employed by the SABC therefore their payment was supposed to be paid by the company. We have then since contacted the police to go and try understand what is going on and all three are on their way home to Johannesburg.”
